Visitant vs Umami

Umami is the open-source, MIT-licensed analytics you can run on your own server for free, with a generous cloud free tier. Visitant is a hosted cookie-free tool for shop and blog owners that adds the AI loop. In our view: Umami if you are technical or need the biggest free tier; Visitant if you want the AI side of your traffic and a dashboard that needs no setup.

  • Both set no cookies and need no consent banner; Umami Cloud runs in the US and the EU, Visitant in Poland.
  • Umami Cloud Hobby is $0 for 100,000 events a month with 6 months of data; Visitant Free is $0 for 5,000 events with 13 months of data.
  • Umami Pro is $20 for 1,000,000 events (20 websites, 10 team members, 2 years of data); Visitant Business is $39 for 1,000,000 events (100 sites, 15 seats, 5 years).
  • Umami has funnels, goals, journeys, retention and revenue reports on every plan, and session replay on Business; Visitant has funnels and revenue from Pro and no session replay.
  • Umami lists AI referrers individually and, as of 2026-09-25, has no AI channel in its release notes; Visitant groups 21 assistants and logs 44 AI crawlers.

The AI loop

In Umami a visit from ChatGPT shows up as the referrer chatgpt.com in the Sources view, and you build a segment by hand to sum up assistants. Visitant starts one step earlier: a one-line server snippet records every fetch by 44 recognised AI crawlers, split into training, AI search and live user fetches, and checks claimed crawlers against the IP ranges their operators publish, so a spoofed GPTBot is flagged. Then visits from 21 assistants are grouped as one channel with each assistant listed, text-fragment landings become a separate "likely AI" estimate, AI agents are kept out of human counts, and goals, funnels and revenue can be read per assistant. Umami's funnels and revenue reports can be filtered by referrer, so per-assistant conversions are reachable with manual filters; the crawler log and the spoof check are not. AI crawler hits never count toward a Visitant plan limit.

// When to pick Umami
  • You want to self-host for $0 in licence fees: Umami is MIT-licensed and runs on your own server; Visitant is hosted only.
  • You need the biggest free tier: 100,000 events a month on Hobby versus 5,000 on Visitant Free.
  • You want session replay, retention cohorts and journeys: Umami has them (replay on Business), Visitant does not.
  • You are a developer: Umami has an MCP server, a typed API client and an open codebase.
// When to pick Visitant
  • You want to see AI crawlers (44 recognised, spoofed ones flagged), which Umami cannot log.
  • You want assistants grouped automatically: 21 assistants as one channel, no segment to maintain.
  • You want data in Poland only and an "Ask" box in plain English or Polish.
  • You want a weekly email digest, alerts and Core Web Vitals in one plan (Visitant Pro, $12).

Questions

Can I import Umami data into Visitant?

Not yet. Umami exports data via API or CSV, but Visitant has no importer, so Visitant counts from the day you add the script.

What does each tool cost at 100,000 and 1,000,000 events?

Umami Cloud: $0 (Hobby) and $20 (Pro). Visitant: $12 (Pro) and $39 (Business). Umami is cheaper at both volumes; Visitant's price buys the AI loop and 5 years of data on Pro.

Does Umami group AI assistant traffic?

Not as of 2026-09-25. Its Channels view (since v2.16.0) groups search and social; AI referrers such as chatgpt.com appear individually and you build a segment yourself. Visitant groups 21 assistants automatically.

Does Umami show AI crawlers such as GPTBot?

No. Umami runs in the browser and crawlers do not run JavaScript. Visitant records crawler fetches with a server snippet and checks claimed crawlers against published IP ranges.

How does Umami count events?

Each pageview is one event, each custom event is one event, and each stored event property counts as one more event (umami.is/pricing, 2026-09-25). Above the plan allowance Umami bills per extra event and keeps collecting. Visitant counts pageviews and events, and AI crawler hits never count toward the limit.
